2005 French & Peel (Thorne) 57′ Narrowboat. UNIQUE… Read on!
This is what can only be described as one of a kind. This 57′ narrowboat was built at Thorne by French & Peel (regarded as very good quality at the time) and was built using 12mm base steel, 6mm sides and 5mm topsides, unlike the usual 10-6-4 used today. We have recently had a surveyor cast his meter across to confirm that these are still the current thicknesses.
This boat is also unique in the fact that she is completely remote controlled! Powered by a 50hp Beta Marine Diesel (in a silencer box), it is coupled up to a hydraulic unit that has thrusters in all directions. It can quite literally be driven from the bank, which was the intended application when she was built. Her previous owner has her built so he could operate locks and drive the boat in without getting back on board! Which works effortlessly.
She has a boatman’s cabin which contains the helm and a small 2 person dinette with storage. Internally, she requires a lot of work, ideally a strip out to linings and paint, then refit a galley, bathroom and bedroom. A great blank canvas for anyone wishing to make it their own. Some existing equipment can easily be reused with a clean including a corner bath, sink, some kitchen appliances (Washing Machine, Freezer, Fridge, Sink) It is fitted with a Hurrican heater (the best!) and C-Tek Battery Charger and Travelpower unit.
All in all, this is a very capable and well built boat, she requires a lot of work but will be fabulous when done. There are not many narrowboats out there that are this substantial and you will not have to worry about corrosion for years to come!! She will come blacked as this is being carried out in Feb 2021.
The layout is not very conventional but could be very easily changed without moving bulkheads (not too difficult anyway) It is in effect reverse layout with a large open area at the bow which would make an ideal bedroom, the exisiting bedroom is next to it and then a storage area with the heater on. This leads into the bathrooms and then onto the kitchen. This is then up into the helm cabin area. The boat has so much potential, the right person will make it an amazing boat.
