The Journey vs. the Destination: Modern Trawlers versus Sleek Speedsters

Whether you focus on the journey or the destination, or somewhere in between, this quick-read shares the pros and cons of three types of boats designed for extended long-range cruising. Read more below on the journey versus the destination of modern trawlers versus sleek speedsters.

Image caption: DeFever Trawler 49 Lioness

Pros and Cons of Three Trawler Types

Takin’ It S-L-O-W

Modern trawlers combine the best features of 19th century commercial fishing boats after which they were styled and today’s popular luxury yachts. The result: Recreational cruisers, ranging from 35 to 60 feet, that take you thousands of miles in comfort and style – safely and economically.

Trawlers with their wide, full-displacement boat hulls mean roomier, more luxurious living spaces, extra headroom, smoother rides, greater stability and accessibility. They slip under bridges and navigate well in shallow water. They’re easy to maneuver and extremely versatile. Want to fish? Sunbathe? Entertain? There’s plenty of deck space to accommodate several activities – simultaneously. And having to stop and refuel happens once in a blue moon.

Depending on how you look at it, the primary advantage/disadvantage of a trawler is its top speed – which is no more than 22 mph. Some people find that annoyingly slow, while others appreciate the unhurried, leisureliness of it all. True, you won’t be able to outrun rough weather, but the trawler’s full-displacement boat hull makes it mighty seaworthy in heavy seas.

If you’ve got plenty of time to go places, take a trawler. There’s no better way to slow down and unwind.

High-Performance Motor Yacht Cigarette Tirranaa, Pros and Cons of Modern Trawlers versus Sleek Speedsters

Image caption: High-Performance Motor Yacht Cigarette Tirranaa

Gotta Get There NOW

The upside:

If you’re more into the destination than the journey or if time is a factor, a high-performance motor yacht is a smart choice. They’re luxurious, safe, loaded with amenities and offer all the recreational activities of slower trawlers. The big plus is their planing hull, which generates lift as you increase speed, and helps you cover a lot of water in a lot less time. Of course, the yacht’s size and type have a lot to do with how fast you can go as well, but 30 to 60 mph is typical. Another advantage: The amount of time spent traveling to and from your destination is less, so you won’t need to stow as many provisions.

The downside:

Handling a larger boat at higher speeds requires experience and concentration, which may limit the number of people who can help with piloting. Increased speed also raises the chance of hitting debris and possibly damaging your boat. The biggest drawback, however, is fuel consumption. Doubling or tripling your speed burns almost twice as much fuel. Plus, you have to take time to stop and refill the tank. But, don’t let anybody kid you: Fast pleasure cruising is FUN! So, if time is of the essence or you simply enjoy flying across the water at breakneck speed, there’s a motor yacht with your name on it.

Beneteau Swift Trawler 35, Pros and Cons of Modern Trawlers versus Sleek Speedsters

Image caption: Beneteau Swift Trawler 35

Somewhere In The Middle

In between full-displacement trawlers with their deep drafts and rounded hulls and fast cruising boats with deep-V planing hulls, lies what is often classified as a swift trawler. Swift trawlers have a semi-displacement boat hull that is V-shaped at the front and flat by the time it reaches the rear. This relatively simple design compromise improves performance without sacrificing volume, large fuel tanks or the ability to travel long distances efficiently and power up when necessary. So, if you’re not planning any transatlantic crossings, but still have your heart set on extended cruising, this in-between trawler has the get-up-and-go you need when you’ve someplace to be or a storm system crosses your path.

Award-Winning Motor Yacht AMIRA Splashes Onto the Yachts for Sale Market

Launched by British company Pearl Yachts in 2018, its newest and largest flagship, the PEARL 95, has recently joined the yachts-for-sale marketplace. Motor yacht AMIRA, the award-winning sport yacht, is one of four 95’10” vessels launched by the young, yet vastly popular shipyard.

How Life at Sea Should Be

Through the highly successful collaboration between renowned naval architect Bill Dixon and interior designer Kelly Hoppen, AMIRA can accommodate up to 10 guests in 5 well-appointed staterooms including a very well-lit, full-beam master suite on main deck and VIP staterooms on lower deck.

Motor Yacht AMIRA Splashes Onto the Yachts for Sale Market

The semi-raised pilothouse designed yacht is a true testament to how life at sea should be, as she brings in the outdoors through floor-to-ceiling windows and sliding glass doors in all directions. Awards such as the Best Interior Design – Power Yachts and Best Main Saloon at the International Yacht and Aviation Awards 2019, as well as Best Layout at the World Yachts Trophies 2018, clearly reflect her impact on the yacht world.

Since her delivery, the 2018 GRP-built motor yacht has undergone significant upgrades making her the most highly specified PEARL 95 on the water with very little use: only 584 running hours on each engine.

Dream Big, Dream Smart: The Latest Yacht Designs Emphasize Functionality and Sustainability

It all starts with a dream, that vision or idea just waiting to be realized: what if I could design my own yacht? The thought may be fleeting or percolate over time, but when that first meeting with a skilled yacht designer occurs, something magical happens and the dream suddenly transforms into possibility. What if? Can you do that? Has this ever been done? Can it be longer? Sleeker? What about that exterior color my family likes? The potential is endless and the yacht designer’s job is to weave these ideas into an exquisite work of art that combines comfort with practicality.

No Dream Too Big or Too Small

No dream is too big or too small for a skilled yacht designer, and for Tillberg Design of Sweden (TDoS), the dreams began rather large. The company was founded in 1964 by Robert Tillberg, who served as coordinating interior architect for the fourth MS Kungsholm, which was the prestigious Swedish American Line’s first true transatlantic ocean liner and cruise ship. The largest passenger vessel in Scandinavia at the time, MS Kungsholm was thoughtfully designed with several innovations, including outside cabins and large lido decks, and featured a bright and contemporary interior of golden brown and blue hues, highlighted by curated works of art and finely carved woodwork. Over the decades to come, TDoS produced the interiors for hundreds of large vessels, while making the logical segue into the luxury superyacht market.

While the desire to explore that spurred the conceptualization of the 1964 MS Kungsholm remains constant, TDoS has seen the dreams of its clients evolve to include an emphasis on functionality and sustainability.

Somnio, The World’s Largest Private Residence Yacht

Translating its expertise in large ocean liner design into a modern-day concept, TDoS recently collaborated with U.K.-based yacht design firm Winch Design on the master plan and yacht interior concepts for Somnio, the world’s largest private residence yacht. At a length of 728 feet, the six-deck Somnio will be fitted with 39 customizable apartments and numerous restaurants, bars and amenities, and will claim its record-breaking title once it is launched in 2024.

Somnio, The World’s Largest Private Residence Yacht

Somnio represents the convergence of two industries, says Daniel Nerhagen, TDoS Partner and Yacht Director. While the commercial build side brings functionality, process and efficiency to the project, the superyacht side shares its expertise in design, quality and craftsmanship. “I see shared knowledge and hybrid projects as a natural step for the yachting industry in the coming years,” he says. “All of this gives the owners the best value for their investment.”

Mimer, The Ultimate Expedition Experience

Mimer Yacht Design Concept, The Ultimate Expedition Experience

With the 196ft concept Mimer, the talented team at TDoS challenged themselves to visualize an explorer yacht that would meet the most demanding cruising requirements of Antarctica, while remaining elegant enough to stand out against the vibrant Miami skyline or turn heads when docked stern-to in Monaco’s glittering Port Hercules. This beautiful yet functional yacht concept accommodates 12 guests in six cabins and offers hybrid diesel-electric propulsion, two tender garages, a 6,000nm range, a helipad deck, and all of the amenities desired for transatlantic expeditions.

Mimer Yacht Design Concept, The Ultimate Expedition Experience

Customization remains at the core of every yacht design dream, and the Mimer yacht concept is offered in three yacht layout configurations. For maximum guest space, the World Traveler configuration offers an additional marina/beach lounge on the main deck. If additional storage is the requirement, the Adventure Explorer layout sees the marina/beach lounge replaced with a large, open and multipurpose storage area under the helipad deck. A third configuration offers a fully enclosed helicopter hangar.

Scintilla, Sparkling Sustainability

393ft Scintilla yacht design concept

The 393ft Scintilla yacht concept is a collaboration of yacht design between TDoS, DreamLiner Yachting, IYC, and Laurent Giles Naval Architects. This modern world voyager yacht design is intended to provide the ultimate cruising experience while accommodating up to 36 guests and 44 crew members within a platform that blends functionality with sustainability.

393ft Scintilla yacht design concept

Conceived as a forward-thinking concept that will wear its design well into the future, Scintilla is planned to incorporate locally-sourced and eco-conscious materials throughout its yacht interior and exterior spaces. The design will also accommodate hybrid engines as well as a combination battery and alternative fuel system to meet the needs of environmentally-conscious owners and minimize the yacht’s environmental footprint.

Sustainability Beyond

With nearly 60 years of experience in exterior and interior yacht design as well as furniture and fabric design, branding and graphic design, TDoS takes pride in the expertise of its large multi-faceted team.

Sustainability is integral to the TDoS yacht design process, from the engineering work through the build’s construction. The yacht designers take a sustainable approach when assessing such aspects as sensor-controlled lights and ventilation, natural lighting, energy glazing and external shades, high efficiency appliances and even solar power. TDoS explores the latest in smart technologies as well as innovative renewable and recycled materials for yacht interiors to see how they meld with functional and aesthetic requirements so as to enhance the passenger experience.

Aegir 2.0, A Wind-Powered Trimaran

Aegir 2.0, A Wind-Powered Trimaran yacht design concept

To illustrate the possibilities of green technology and as part of the efforts of the U.N.’s 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, TDoS created Aegir 2.0, a concept study for a 265ft yacht with an extremely minimal environmental footprint. This wind-powered trimaran combines excellent hydronics with a hybrid wind-electric propulsion system that re-charges all batteries when under sail. Fitted with the amenities expected of a superyacht, including an infinity pool, Jacuzzi tub and seamless indoor/outdoor transitions, the Aegir 2.0 concept combines bespoke Scandinavian luxury with a truly sustainable approach.

“Our thorough know-how caters for new experiences regardless of whether your dreams see you looking for adventures while exploring the world, or enjoying laid-back relaxation in quiet ports,” says Nerhagen. “A green approach in the cruising industry will build trust with environmentally-conscious clients, while inviting a bespoke luxury that caters for tailored experiences with a respect for our ecosystems.”

The upper deck’s exterior is spacious, and also features a sofa with two armchairs – this time, in the sun. Meanwhile, the sun deck features sunpads aft, and also has an outdoor dining table and a wet bar beneath a hardtop. Forward lies the Jacuzzi with sunpads for pure enjoyment.

What drew you to the yachting world?

My debut in the yachting industry wasn’t initially drawn on a clear path. In 2006 I moved to the French Riviera after my post-graduate studies for personal reasons and when looking into a job, I found that a yacht brokerage company in Monaco was advertising for a manager role. I was hired a few hours after my interview and never left the industry since.

How did you get your start in yachting?

My first job after university was into a small yacht brokerage company in Monaco with a corner office in Miami – I worked there for 6 years and learnt the ropes of the industry thanks to a very passionate boss, who let me discover the business in its various aspects: yacht sales, charter, project management and new construction process.

Who are some influential people in your life that you look up to?

I always consider my family as a lighthouse in the tempest. I’m an only daughter and my parents and relatives are my supporters. When I was younger, I had the chance to get inspired by my grandmothers, with opposite characters but both strong and loving.

I had the chance to meet a lot of influential political, diplomatic, and business figures in my academic studies: I observed them and been fascinated by their knowledge, their way of interacting with people and the charisma they were radiating.

With regards to my working life, I had a few mentors that led me to the job I have nowadays. In particular, I’ll never stop to thank Mr. Neil Moore, Burgess former Head of Charter Management and Mr. Richard Lambert, Burgess Head of Sales for taking the best out of me in these years and teaching me how to blend my passional personality into a knowledgeable professional.

What are some challenges you face and how do you overcome them?

The yachting industry is constantly dealing with issues of timing and flexibility. For those who enter a specific job, especially in commercial, technical, and operational roles, they need to accept last minute happenings, travels, changes of schedule. Exactly like those who cover yacht crew roles. It is not of an easy understanding and the challenge resides into trying to explain to people that cover standard roles in other industries how sometimes days and schedule can look like.

What are you currently working on and how do you stay inspired?

Like some of my friends and colleagues know, I’m saying that “sometimes I need a day of 48h” to complete everything I wish to complete. I have a B2B and a B2C role in the company and both require attention and dedication at the same level. I’m also involved with MYBA, YPY and other industry non-profit organizations: I’ve always wished to give my contribution and I’ll continue to do so with much enthusiasm.
