W Bates & Son are known as one of the oldest boatyards & marina on the River Thames today, established over 150 years ago as “Taylor and Bates” building their first boats in the late 1800s. In 1934, W Bates & Son was formed. During the war with over 150 employees, air sea rescue vessels, sea plane tenders and the like were built for the MOD. Just after the war the first of the famous and now classic “Star Craft” went into production. W Bates & Son were one of the founding boat building companies at the conception of the now London Boat Show, exhibiting a 25’, 33’ & 40’ Star Craft in the “Marine Section” of the 1948 Motor Show in Olympia.

Established in 1992 by Richard Bates and David de Vere, Bates Wharf Marine Sales is now well known as one of the leading boat brokers, and specialists in boats from 17’ low maintenance sports boats, fishing boats, cruisers and super yachts 68+’.

At our Chertsey head office, we have the largest indoor boat showroom and chandlery on the river Thames – no longer do you have to endure the rain & cold in order to see the boat of your dreams. This complements our existing marina, on-land sales area, on-water sales pontoon and workshop facilities.

1995 saw the opening of our showroom in Sovereign Yacht Harbour (Eastbourne) which facilitated our first expansion into the South Coast market. Ever expanding, in August 2008, our third showroom and yard in Poole was opened. Based near the lifting bridge, we are in a central location to all marinas and have full facilities on site, including sales, valeting, repairs and servicing. In 2015, Bates Wharf Southampton was opened as Fairline Southampton, representing Fairline Yachts exclusively across the South Coast as well as our other major brands.
